Wing Nut
Wing nuts are internally threaded fasteners with two opposing “wings” designed for manual tightening and loosening without the use of tools. They are ideal for applications requiring frequent assembly and disassembly, offering quick installation and removal while maintaining adequate clamping force for light to medium-duty applications.
Types of Wing Nuts
- Standard Wing Nut (American Pattern): Common general-purpose design
- DIN 315 Wing Nut (German Pattern): Rounded wings for improved grip and ergonomics
- Stamped Wing Nut: Lightweight, formed from sheet metal
- Forged Wing Nut: Heavy-duty type with higher strength and durability
- Stainless Steel Wing Nut:Corrosion-resistant for outdoor or marine use
Applicable Standards
Dimensional Requirements:
- ADIN 315 – Wing nuts (metric series)
- ASME B18.6.9 – Wing nuts (inch series)
- ISO 4035 (reference for threading compatibility)
- ASTM A563 / A194 – Material standards (where applicable)
Material Grades
- Carbon Steel: General-purpose applications
- Stainless Steel (AISI 304 / 316): Corrosion-resistant environments
- Brass: Electrical or decorative applications
- Plastic / Nylon:Lightweight and corrosion-resistant (non-load bearing)

- Electrical panels and enclosures
- Furniture assembly and fixtures
- HVAC and light industrial installations
Performance & Key Features
- Tool-free installation and removal
- Quick assembly and disassembly
- Suitable for applications requiring frequent adjustments
- Good grip for manual tightening
- Available in corrosion-resistant materials
Limitations
- Not suitable for high-torque or heavy-load applications
- Limited clamping force compared to standard or heavy hex nuts
- May loosen under high vibration unless combined with locking methods
Design Considerations
- Use only in low to medium load applications
- Consider environmental exposure when selecting material
- Combine with washers for better load distribution if required
- Avoid use in critical or high-vibration assemblies without locking support
